Diploma in Midwifery and Obstetrical Nursing will prepare you to provide effective care to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and certain time after birth, focusing on health promotion and empowerment of the pregnant woman.

The aim of this programme is to form professional trained health staff in the field of midwifery that are able to provide advanced support and care for women during pregnancy, labour and birth as well as enhance the maternity profession and beliefs about women and children.

The Diploma in Midwifery and Obstetrical Nursing is targeted at practicing midwives with a Certificate in Midwifery and registered with the Nursing Council of Mauritius, as well as registered nurses with a Post Basic Certificate in Midwifery.

Our curriculum is designed to prepare midwives who will be forward-thinking, inspiring, reflective and caring. Students will work through a spiraled curriculum that will facilitate and build upon pre-existing knowledge. They will learn to care for women in a variety of settings and improve on their leadership skills, critical thinking, and evidence-based care. Our state-of-the-art skills lab will support excellent learning opportunities. Midwifery students will be given opportunities to work with other health care students so that communication and interprofessional experiences can be explored in practice.

The programme will enable the students to:

  1. Achieve an in-depth understanding of applied anatomy, physiology, and medication to provide safe and effective midwifery and obstetrical care, promote physiological birth and neonatal adaptation.
  2. Effectively assess, implement and evaluate plans of care for pregnant women and their families.
  3. Respond to changing situations of care, to include recognising complications and pathophysiology, and demonstrate the ability to manage obstetric and neonatal emergencies.
  4. Apply key theoretical concepts and frameworks related to social, cultural, emotional and spiritual factors that support salutogenic, woman-centered, midwifery practice.
  5. Acquire a strong sense of professional identity that includes a firm understanding of the scope and diversity of midwifery practice in local, national and international contexts, and the personal accountability, responsibility, and leadership necessary for autonomous practice and the promotion of women’s choices in all settings.
  6. Develop the personal and professional capacity and interpersonal skills required to work in partnership with women, to begin to lead and co-ordinate care in inter-professional and inter-agency contexts to effectively support women and their families.
  7. Develop the cognitive skills to identify and define complex needs and enact appropriate resolution strategies; demonstrate appropriate responses and critical decision making, innovate, and show leadership to manage competing demands.
  8. Develop the skills, values, knowledge, and understanding required to adopt an evidence-based approach to midwifery practice and service improvement. This includes the ability to apply best practices in pre-conception care, antenatal care, preparation for labor, postpartum care, family planning, and the recognition and management of pregnancy complications.
  9. Develop the values, beliefs, and behaviors necessary to provide respectful, ethical, and woman-centered care that prioritizes the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of women. This includes promoting diversity, inclusivity, and a holistic approach that integrates both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in midwifery.
  10. Recognize and respond appropriately to vulnerable women and families and enact safeguarding measures where appropriate. This includes providing tailored advice to pregnant women and families, promoting health education, and supporting women through the stages of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care.

Entry Requirements

Students on the programme will be selected from categories among:

Practicing Midwives, holding a Certificate in Midwifery and registered with the Nursing Council of Mauritius

or

Registered Nurses with the Nursing Council of Mauritius holding a Post Basic Certificate in Midwifery

Fees

The cost of the course will vary according to the mode of delivery (full time/part time) you will opt. We are one of the institutions offering the same course at a very affordable price that suit your budget. Should you wish to sit for an examination, additional fees will be applicable depending on the examination centre.

Application Fee: Rs 1,000

Admin Fee: Rs 6,500

If you have not completed any recognised Diploma or Degree before, then you will definitely enjoy the privilege under the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) for the whole duration of course, offered by the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology. Only Application and Administration fee will be applicable.
