Welcome to Polytechnics Mauritius: Your Guide to Applying as an International Student

Hey there! We know that applying to study in a new country can feel overwhelming, but don’t worry—we’re here to help you every step of the way! Let’s break down the application process into easy steps so you can focus on what really matters: your education and adventure in Mauritius!

1. Choose your course

First things first, take a look at the exciting courses we offer. You can explore all your options on our website here. Once you find a program that sparks your interest, you can either register your interest online or reach out directly to our friendly admissions team at [email protected] for more information.

Important Dates

  • February/March intake: Apply by the 3rd week of January.
  • August/September intake: Apply by the 3rd week of July.

2. Check your eligibility

All candidates who are from countries who does not follow the Cambridge certification, Polytechnics Mauritius will have to request for an equivalency report from the National Equivalency Committee of Mauritius to confirm your eligibility for the programme that you are applying for.

The process may take between 3-4 weeks. Below the list of documents required for the equivalency report:

  1. Birth Certificate
  2. Passport copy
  3. Academic qualification
  4. Academic marksheet

Please note that these documents will have to be certified true copy by a legal person (Stamped of certified true copy on each document)

3. Your first language is not english

If English is not your first language, you will need to provide proof of your English proficiency before you can start your journey at Polytechnics Mauritius. You can do this by:

  • Completing secondary qualifications in English

Taking an English test (like the International English Testing System (IELTS) with a score of at least 6)

4. Understand your finances

Before you wrap up your application, it’s important to know about the fees involved. Here’s a quick list:

5. What happens next?

As a part of our entry requirements, all candidates are requested to go through an interview panel which is compulsory.

The interview is conducted via Microsoft Teams platform. The date of the interview is communicated by either the Programme Leader or Programme Coordinator of each respective area of study.

6. Get your response

After your interview, we’ll assess your application. Expect to receive an email about the outcome within 48 hours!

7. Receive your offer letter

If you’re selected, we’ll send you an offer letter. Please confirm your acceptance for the offer of seat not more than one week after being accepted for the programme. It takes 48 hours from the time that the interview is done to receiving the offer letter.

8. Pay your fees
For all international students, full payment of the first-year tuition fees is required in advance upon seat confirmation to secure their enrollment. Students who complete this payment within 15 days of offer letter will qualify for a 10% early bird discount on their tuition fees. Alternatively, if the full payment is not made at the time of confirmation or made 15 days after the offer letter, the total tuition fees must be paid in full by latest one week before the student’s arrival in Mauritius. For the next academic years payment will have to be made before the start of the new semester.
9. Apply for your visa

Visa and immigration procedures are crucial considerations for international students planning to study at Polytechnics Mauritius. Polytechnics Mauritius, ensuring that international students have a smooth transition into Mauritius and can focus on their academic pursuits.

Polytechnics Mauritius provides comprehensive guidance on visa application procedures specific to each student’s nationality.

We assist in verifying and ensuring that all necessary documents, such as admission letters and financial statements, meet visa application requirements.

The institution provides ongoing support and reminders to ensure students maintain compliance with Mauritian immigration laws and regulations, as well as information on travel restrictions, visa conditions, and updates on immigration policies are communicated promptly to students.

Once the down-payment representing the 50% of the tuition fees has been successfully credited into Polytechnics Mauritius account, the Student Affairs Team will proceed with the visa procedures of the students.

A list of documents required will be sent to the students and the list is as follows (all documents should have to be original and should be sent via DHL/UPS or FEDEX to the Student Affairs Department:

  • 4 passport size photos,
  • Passport copy in color (passport should be valid for the entire duration of the study),
  • Application to enter Mauritius,
  • Student letter,
  • Original Medical test (HIV should be negative/ Hepatitis B should be negative and Chest -x-ray confirming that the student does not have any contagious diseases),
  • Original Certificate of character (this refers to the police clearance certificate confirming that the student does not have any criminal records in their home country),
  • School leaving certificate and your last academic qualification,
  • Accommodation letter. The landlord should also provide a letter confirming that the student will be staying in his/ her apartment during the duration of the studies/ a proof of ID and a latest utility bill,
  • Original letter from your sponsor certifying that he/she will be taking care of the student’s expenses and tuition fees/ 6 months bank statement showing a minimum of USD 2500 on each statement/ ID copy of the sponsor. The bank statement should be original with the stamp from the bank. The sponsor’s letter should also be original and not a scanned copy.

Note: Once the students are in Mauritius, the students will have a delay of two months to open a local bank account. They should have a minimum of Rs 150,000 on the account.

For the visa documents the completed documents should be sent through email first for verification.

Once the students have the approval, they can then send the original documents via post/ DHL to the following address:

The student visa process takes between 4 to 6 weeks, after which a provisional student visa will be issued to the attention of the student. Upon arrival in Mauritius students are expected to undergo a series of medical tests and upon successfully meeting the medical tests requirements the student visa valid for the duration of the studies is issued to the students.

10. Accommodation assistance

Polytechnics Mauritius does not have on campus accommodation; however, assistance is provided to students to find accommodations close to the campus vicinity, whilst taking into consideration the diverse needs of international students. Accommodation proposed to students are comfortable convenient facilities and a supportive community environment conducive to academic and personal growth.

11. Assistance with off-campus accommodation

We are committed to supporting you in finding suitable housing nearby. Here’s how we can assist you:

  • Resource Center: Our Student Affairs Department has compiled a list of recommended off-campus housing options. These include local apartments and shared houses that are conveniently located near the campus.
  • Student Network: We encourage you to connect with fellow students, especially your seniors, who can offer insights and recommendations based on their own experiences. Joining student groups or forums can be a great way to find roommates and share housing information.

12. Tips for finding accommodation
  • Start your search early to ensure you have plenty of options.
  • Consider factors such as distance to campus, transportation, safety, and amenities.
  • Be prepared with your documentation and finance.

13. Your arrival in Mauritius

In order for us to organize your airport transfer, we will suggest that you ensure to send us a copy of your air ticket at least 1 week prior to your arrival.

To make your arrival as smooth and welcoming as possible, members of the staff will meet you at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam international airport.

Another reason to come to Polytechnics Mauritius on Arrival Day is that you will be able to participate in the Orientation Week from the start. The Orientation Week filled with activities, excursions and tours and provides a great opportunity to make new friends, see new places and learn more about the Mauritian culture.

14. Medical tests required for international students in Mauritius

As an international student studying in Mauritius, it is essential to comply with the medical requirements set by the Passport and Immigration Office. These tests ensure the health and safety of all residents and students.  Below is an overview of the medical tests you need to complete upon arrival.

Mandatory Medical Examination

  • HIV
  • Hepatitis B
  • Chest X-ray

The medical tests are organized by the school and the students are accompanied by a staff member to the medical laboratory.

Upon reception of the medical reports, same shall be submitted to the Passport and Immigration Office.

After which the student visa valid for the duration of the studies shall be issued by the Passport and Immigration Office.

15. Transportation guide

Navigating Mauritius is made easy with our comprehensive transportation guide, which outlines public transport options and safety tips for traveling around the island.

Taxis are available in every corner of the island and in front of every major shopping mall, but these can be quite expensive. Mauritian taxis do not come with meters, so the price is normally established by the driver. Be sure to ask for the price beforehand.

The cheaper and primary mode of public transportation on the island is by bus. You will see several sheltered bus-stops on every road of the island. The transport schedule generally depends on the bus route, but in most cases, you can expect a bus to go by every 10 to 30 minutes. While there is no bus app in Mauritius, you can check mauritius-buses.com for schedules. However, the website is not entirely reliable, so locals often prefer to check the schedule directly with the station master. At some bus stops, the different bus routes and times can be found plastered on the wall. There are no bus passes in Mauritius, but tickets can run between 30 to 60 MUR.

  • Public Transport: Use licensed taxis and public transportation services. Verify fare rates before starting your journey.
  • Driving: If renting a vehicle, ensure familiarity with local traffic laws and driving conditions. Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers.
16. Health precautions

Mauritius boasts a healthcare system that combines public and private healthcare facilities. The public healthcare system, managed by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, provides basic medical services to residents, including emergency care and subsidized treatment. Private healthcare facilities offer additional services with varying levels of coverage and costs.

For international students, having adequate health insurance is crucial to cover medical expenses that may arise during their stay in Mauritius. Health insurance not only ensures access to timely medical care but also provides financial protection against unexpected healthcare costs, ensuring peace of mind and a smoother academic experience.
