Currently, Polytechnics Mauritius Ltd (Pamplemousses and Rose Belle Campuses) is offering a ‘National Diploma in Nursing’ programme awarded by the Mauritius Institute of Health This is a three-year, full-time nursing programme consisting of both 45% theory and 55% nursing practice. Throughout the three years, the Diploma Nursing Programme combines both clinical placement experiences and theoretical input with the aim of preparing a safe, competent nurse practitioner equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge, confidence and sound attitude to meet the needs of a changing healthcare environment in Mauritius.

All theoretical inputs take place at the Pamplemousses and Rose Belle Campuses, whereas all clinical placements take place within the five regional public hospitals supported by professional mentors. Furthermore, the student nurses on the programme are given the opportunity to undergo some weeks of practice in some Specialty areas such as Oncology, Burns, Cardiac Centre, Community Health, Mental Health, Ophthalmology and ENT.

Upon successful completion of the Diploma in Nursing Programme, the student nurses are eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing Council of Mauritius.

The Polytechnics Mauritius Limited is currently working on a strategic plan to introduce, expand and implement other courses in nursing and in paramedical in order to be an excellent centre and hub for nursing education in Mauritius.

The goal is to cultivate advance nursing professionals with competence, knowledge and skills in managing specific and specialised healthcare issues and improving the clinical practice.

SC/GCE ‘O’ Level with 5 credits including one Science Subject (in one or more sittings)

Course Content

Year 1 - Semester 1 - Clinical Placement 12 weeks

Life Science for Health Care
This module provides the students with a broad understanding of human anatomy, physiology and bio chemistry with a view to enable them to apply such knowledge to nursing practice.

Fundamentals of Nursing

This module provides the students with fundamental knowledge regarding Basic Nursing Care, Science of Nutrition and First Aid, so as to prepare them to develop the required skills and attitudes to meet the basic needs of those who cannot care for themselves. It also aims to make them aware of the legal issues, importance of Communication, Information Technology and Customer Care in Nursing.

Psychosocial Dimensions of Nursing

The module provides the understanding of essential concepts of psychology and sociology in view of developing the Nurses’ therapeutic skills in providing holistic care within different cultural settings

Pharmacology for Nurses

The aim of this module is to develop sound knowledge base on clinical therapeutics and facilitate the acquisition of the necessary practical skills in order that nursing practices involved in the ordering, storage and administration of drugs are safe and competent.

Year 1 - Semester 2 - Clinical Placement 12 weeks

Fundamentals of Nursing

This module seeks to enhance the knowledge of the students on the basic concepts and the various steps that are involved in conducting research, while exploring its relevance to nursing, it will also develop their understanding for their future role as a novice researcher.

Principles of Nursing Research

This module seeks to enhance the knowledge of the students on the basic concepts and the various steps that are involved in conducting research, while exploring its relevance to nursing, it will also develop their understanding for their future role as a novice researcher.

Health Promotion

This module is designed to develop and enhance the students’ knowledge of health promotion strategies, to acquire abilities in critical areas of nursing practice, evaluate, select and implement appropriate strategies

Year 2 - Semester 1 - Clinical Placement 12 weeks

Medicine / Medical Nursing and Surgery / Surgical Nursing
This module explores the pathophysiology of diseases that affect all age groups at both clinical and community level. It addresses health, diseases, illness from a medical and surgical perspective while integrating applied sciences for the nursing management of clients.

It equally enhances the student’s abilities in teaching and promoting learning in practice areas for professional development.

Career Opportunities

Upon successful completion of the Diploma in Nursing Programme, the student nurses are eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing Council of Mauritius and enrol for BA in Nursing at Polytechnics.

Fees

The cost of the course will vary according to the mode of delivery (full time/part time) you will opt. We are one of the institutions offering the same course at a very affordable price that suit your budget. Should you wish to sit for an examination, additional fees will be applicable depending on the examination centre.

Application Fee: Rs 1,000

Admin Fee: Rs 6,500

If you have not completed any recognised Diploma or Degree before, then you will definitely enjoy the privilege under the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) for the whole duration of course, offered by the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology. Only Application and Administration fee will be applicable.
